In another feature for his collection of interviews with network ReelBlack, Dick Gregory is upset with the people who made Miles Davis recent film, Miles Ahead. According to Mr. Gregory the film played as a disservice to the true history of Miles. In a clip released we get to here a full breakdown on why he is against the film which stars actor Don Cheadle. Around the same time of this interviews’s release, Mr. Gregory shared a statement on his Instagram page which read the following;
Did you know Miles? Miles and I shared many intense moments together. Back then, we never knew who was going to be alive the next week. Everything was different, everything we said mattered. Today, it’s as if the folks who walked this journey together don’t matter. I respect your right as a storyteller to tell your story. What I am saying is the Miles I witnessed with my own eyes was phenomenal. So much bigger than Miles Ahead. I would hope that if it was I who was deceased, the folks who were there with me, my friends or foes would set the record straight. Artistic freedom only gives you so much of a pass. Most are not connoisseurs. For many, this film will be the enduring memory of Miles. It is that altered reality that I am passionately rejecting. Otherwise, we need films to correct the films. The Hollywood I know is not going for that. Just the opinion of a cat who sat belly up to the bar with Miles. That Miles I love and appreciate, that Miles I didn’t see in Miles Ahead. I respect artists but I more so respect historians and eye witnesses. The only endorsement history needs is facts.
