As the year comes to a close, we can all agree that 2015 was a great year for stand up comedy. Lots of comedians released stand up specials. But nothing equates to when a comedian releases their very first special. Here are 5 debut comedy specials that we loved in 2015.
By Corey Tate
Michelle Buteau (Above) – Michelle Buteau is one of a kind. Not only is her personality unique and enjoyable, but so is her stand up. In Michelle Buteau’s Comedy Central Half Hour special, she performs excerpts of her debut album, “Shut Up!”. In this special, Michelle touches on things like, the day she met her husband, the first time she met her white european in-laws, and the struggles of being in an interracial marriage. All of the stories and and subjects that Michelle delivers in this special are intriguing, truthful and thoroughly amusing. Michelle Buteau is honestly a delight to watch.
Lil Rel – The Carmichael Show’s Lil Rel had a debut special special was just that; special. The performance took place in Rel’s hometown of Chicago and was produced by Kevin Hart. In this hour special, Rel introduces himself to the world. Rel talks about family, his unique parenting skills and holds no punches when he gives the world an accurate and intricate depiction, on what it’s like to be from the Westside of Chicago. From the beginning of the special, you quickly realize that Rel’s comedy is for everyone and you can connect to it, no matter who you are or where you’re from. Lil Rel showed us who he was in 2015, 2016 looks promising for him.
Ron Funches – Ron’s album “The Funches Of Us” wasn’t a visual special and didn’t need to be. Just listening to Ron’s material is a delight. During this awesome hour of comedy, Ron talks about how he gravitated from the Southside of Chicago to Portland, Oregon, which proved to be 2 vastly different worlds for him. Ron also discussed how brash but simultaneously cool rap music can be. Another cool thing you’ll notice, is that Ron’s album has an awesome introduction from the king of trill himself, Bun B. “The Funches Of Us” is a solid, must-hear album.
Jermaine Fowler – Jermaine Fowler’s “Give ‘Em Hell Kid” brings us into his world. The special was filmed in his hometown at the D.C. Improv comedy club. During his debut hour special, Jermaine takes us on a nonstop ride of laughter, as he talks about growing up in D.C., the pranks he would pull as a kid and how having a twin brother could sometimes be problematic. Also, you don’t want to miss Jermaine’s hilarious story, about his Aunt Kathy. The special also includes intermittent interviews with Jermaine’s family and friends, which correlates smoothly with the stand up bits. “Give ‘Em Hell Kid” is a special you will want to watch over and over.
Tone Bell – 2015 was a good year for Tone Bell. Tone played major parts in 2 NBC sitcoms, “Bad Judge” and Truth Be Told”. But Tone also found the time to release a debut comedy special. Tone’s Comedy Central Half Hour special is cackle-worthy, from beginning to end. Within the special, Tone talks about how he dreads meeting his cousin’s baby, his trip to a bank that doesn’t take cash, and how Alzheimer’s had led his his grandfather to do insane but hilarious things. If we got this much hilarity in Tone’s half hour special, we can only imagine what his hour special is going to give us.
