Mo’Nique specifically addressed the way society first viewed her relationship with Hicks.

The reality of our relationship is more of a mental mind set….Which one of you out there are able to control someone else’s spirit? Why did James cheat on me? You didn’t know you were in a open relationship, but James felt is was an open relationship. Being in a situation we’re in no one can ever come to us and say your wife did this or your wife did this…It’s not just an open relationship from a sexual standpoint, it’s an open relationship with the dialogue you’re having with your spouse.
